• Somewhat helpful overview. I'm a graduate student taking an exam in folklore without much coursework to prepare me, and I found this useful for helping me pull together the concepts I was reading about in other places. At the same time, it provides lots of examples, and yet not in enough depth that I would cite this source for those examples. Since you'll need to do research on examples anyway, it might make more sense to wade through Toelken's The Dynamics of Folklore or check out Lynne McNeill's Folklore Rules.
• Its a great book, I love to keep reading it.
• This textbook was not intended for undergraduate level courses. It is used primarily at the graduate level. Specifically, it might be assigned for the first course of an M.A. program in Folklore.
• I use this text in an upper-level undergrad English course on folklore, and the students seem to understand the material quite well. I am there to help them work through the more difficult concepts. I wouldn't automatically rule it out for a junior/senior level class.
