Prom Magic And Other ManMade Disasters Settfyrian Chronicles Book 1 edition by Rena Rocford Children eBooks Reviews

  • I need more! I'm in love with the worlds Rena has created and eagerly look forward to future installments. Can't wait to read the next one - hint, hint publisher!
  • This book was so good! As soon as I started reading I just couldn't put it down. Finishing it made me sad because I wanted more. This book needs to be made into a movie now!
  • Quick paced, well written, quirky characters, interesting world. When does the next one come out?
  • “Can’t you just do what he did and pop out?”

“Absolutely not! He used blood, and I will not taint my soul.” Of course the bad guy uses blood sacrifice to fuel his magic. No wonder villains spent so much time laughing. They had it in the bag. Right, stop thinking like a villain.

    Basic Keywords and Intro

    - The 1st book in the Settfyrian Chronicles.
    -  First person POV.
    - When Tessa’s long-time crush tells her that he is in love with her best friend (Maria), her world goes upside down.
    - Little did she know that this was nothing compared to what is about happen.
    - Tessa takes Sean, the new, mysterious guy in school, to the double date that Maria insisted on.
-Then, a wizard kidnaps Maria, mistaking her for a very powerful mage.
    - That powerfully magician is actually Tessa, and the kidnapper is Sean’s father.

    TA TA DA DA!!!

    - Tessa would stop at nothing to save her best friend, even if it means getting captured by the wizard.
     - Tessa and Sean’s relationship is like a blurred line.
    -  One moment, he is teaching her how to embrace her magical powers and falling for her, the other he is protecting her from his father.
-Oh!! Did I forget to mention that Sean sometimes…… helps his father?
    ********************************

    “And what plan was that?”

“Plan A Go there. Rescue Maria. Leave.” I ticked them off on my fingers.

    “And Plan B?” Tarisk asked.

    “See Plan A.”

He rubbed his chin. “I’m worried the second step could use some fleshing out.”

    1) The Magical Fantasy element.

-It is little things that are sprinkled throughout the entire story that make the story magical.
-For example,  magical trees that supply the characters with things that they need.

    2) The Fairy tale retelling aspect

    - I never saw it coming!!!
    - I didn’t expect this book to have a fairy tale retelling factor, but it was perfectly executed.
    - I am not going to tell you which fairy tale is featured here, so you’ll have to figure it out yourself.
    - I wonder if we get a new fairy tale retelling in every new Settfyrian Chronicles book.

    3) Politics

    - I really struggled understanding  this book's Politics.
    - So many new words were used to name and divide different characters into different ( species?), Families, and political views.

“Well, if wishes were dishes, we’d wash them in a river of sorrow and never run dry.”

    Things I liked

    -The World Building
    -Interesting storyline
    -Kickass MC
    -Quirky punchlines
-How the book featured a fairy tale retelling.
    ****************************************

“You are not what I expected.”

“What did you expect, some perfect, well-trained person who knew what they were doing and could solve all of your problems with the wave of a wand?”

    “Someone with respect.”

“Respect? I’m not the one who pulled us all off a cliff!

    Things I didn’t like

    -   It was a bit difficult for me to understand the Political aspects.
    -  I still don’t really get it.
    -  I am going to keep an eye on the reviews as they get posted. Maybe someone is going to explain/ mention how the politics in that world function because I am still interested in reading the next installment of the Settfyrian Chronicles.

I received an eARC in exchange with an honest review.
  • Teenage drama mixes with adventurous magic, sending this story into a whole new twist in the world of fairy tales, dragons and maybe getting that date for prom.

When Tessa's high school crush breaks her heart by shoving a note in her hand and asking her to give it to her best friend, so he can ask her to prom, she's sure life has turned into a disaster, but she has no clue how bad things are going to get. Not when the new boy in town takes an interest in her. Not only is the guy the son of a powerful wizard, but his father has put his sights on Tessa and plans to kill her for a power she didn't know she possessed.

Tessa is a senior, the third in a group of three girls and not exactly the most popular of her friends. Her dreams are similar to many girls of her age, making her easy to relate to. She can hold her own if forced to, but rather gives her all to support her friends. It's this mixture of spunk yet heart which makes her fun to cheer for the whole way through.

While starting out with a normal, high school scene, this tale quickly plunges into imagination pure. The first chapters fall along the dating high school drama line with the addition of Sean, who comes across awkward at best. His character was hard to get a handle on most of the book, which becomes more understandable as the plot unfolds, but still, left for an odd relationship even through the end. But then, this story embraces odd and quirky with a magical flare, creating an intriguing world which is easy to get lost in and feeds the desire to see where all of it will go next.

This fast-paced plunges into a strange balance between high school romance, magical fantasy and fairy tale re-tellings with addictive fun. And it grows stronger the more the story progresses, despite some stumbles early on. Not all questions are answered and not all aspects are clearly explained, but it is only the first in a series. and I'm looking forward to see where it goes next.

I received a complimentary copy and enjoyed reading it, so I wanted to leave my honest thoughts.
  • [I received a free eBook of this title from Curiosity Quills Press and have willingly provided an honest review.]

This book starts out pretty slow, with not much really happening except a bunch of typical teenage angst. But once magic starts to seep into the tale, the pace finally begins to pick up a bit. And once the scene shifts out of our reality, things become even more heated.

There are so many interesting and intriguing characters from Tessa herself, and her friend Maria, to Sean and Chrys, Tarisk and Karu, Cindy, Quara and Seliana, just to name a few. Many of them seemed to have alternate personalities at times (although the reason why is discovered along the way), and many of them remain something of a mystery throughout the tale. However, my understanding is that this is the first in a series of books, and I am hopeful that many of these chracters will make a return appearance and be more fleshed out in future volumes.

Indeed, while the world-building was in many aspects robust and detailed, there were quite a few things that were not explained very well, if at all. For example, much of the politics of the land in which they find themselves went entirely over my head, as did much about the different races inhabiting it.

Overall, though, this was definitely an entertaining story; one that I would recommend to readers who enjoy Young Adult Fantasy.
