Tales of the Turing Church Hacking religion enlightening science awakening technology Giulio Prisco 9781791807610 Books Reviews
- “Tales of the Turing Church†reminds me of reading “The Whole Earth Catalog†many years ago. It makes you want to learn more about many different topics. Giulio Prisco takes a broad look at Transhumanism with a particular focus on the convergence of science and religion. The aim of the book in a nutshell “Our descendants in the far future will join the community of God-like beings among the stars and beyond, and use transcendent technology to resurrect the dead and remake the universe.†Let me take you on a brief tour of the book.
First, what is Transhumanism? Neuroscientist Sebastian Seung says “But Transhumanism is the inevitable and logical extension of Enlightenment thought, which exalted the power of human reason… Transhumanism resolves a major problem of the Enlightenment, which was based on a scientific worldview that deprived many people of the feeling of purpose.†My definition Transhumanism affirms that using advancing technology to radically change the human condition and overcome all human limits, including death, is both feasible and desirable.â€
Prisco believes that “God is undecidable but plausible.†He develops the concept of “a mimimalist, open, extensible, cosmic religion.†He sums up his personal cosmology as
• We will go to the stars and find Gods, build Gods, become Gods, and resurrect the dead from the past with advanced science, space-time engineering and “time magic.â€
• God is emerging from the community of advanced forms of life and civilizations in the universe, and able to influence space-time events anywhere, anytime, including here and now.
• God elevates love and compassion to the status of fundamental forces, key drivers for the evolution of the universe.
To substantiate the Turing Church concept, Prisco first takes us on a tour of how Transhumanism fits into Christian theology. Prisco states “Mormon Transhumanists are persuaded that we will become like God - through science and technology - in a progression without end,†Next, he dives into Eastern religions, agnosticism and Cosmism. He follows up with discussion of how science, science fiction and religion interact. As science fiction author Arthur C. Clarke said ““It may be that our role on this planet is not to worship God, but to create him.â€
Next, Prisco provides into scientific support for Turing Church. Chapters detail quantum mechanics, Bostrom’s simulation hypothesis, cellular automata concepts from John Conway and Stephen Wolfram, Tipler’s Omega Point theories, quantum consciousness, akashic fields. Some of these areas are pretty far afield from mainstream scientific thought but Prisco has provides many references that are worth examining with an open mind. He quotes James Jeans “Science “is not yet in contact with ultimate reality.†His view “I am still persuaded that 1) we will transcend Earth and all limits, but 2) not anytime soon.â€
I want bridges across the interface of science and religion. In “Turing Churchâ€, Giulio Prisco has provided much grist for my mill. This isn’t an easy book to work through; it could stand some more editing. On the other hand, I’m glad it available now because I believe the maxim that “Perfect is the enemy of good enough.†If you have an open mind and want to learn more about Transhumanism and the convergence of religion and science; then this is an excellent book to start with. - every day, i read hungrily, looking for new ideas. no matter how many books I chew through, the new ideas are almost never there. then came giulio prisco's turing church. to me, its ideas are genuinely new.
the book took took off for me when it hit olaf stapleton. then it soared from there. - Guilio is both a brilliant scientist and a gifted writer. His espousal of Transhumanism is derived from his work in hard science. If you have doubts about the Transhumanist viewpoint, this book will probably resolve them. Great read
- I look at Prisco's Cosmism, as a great, mental, app, for either the religious,or the atheist, because in Prisco's view, the universe is big enough for both.
- Giulio Prisco engages in an exceptional exploration of technologically-empowered religion. Most people have never read a book like this. Most have never encountered thoughts like these. And, for many, the experience will be inspiring. For some, it will be transformative, reinvigorating love for life and work and the future of humanity.
- To be clear, I'm very much a secular transhumanist; however, this is still a good book that is more of a sweeping reference on the topical area. The paper version of the book is oversized but given it is a significant contribution to books on transhumanist topics I'm willing to put up with it. Certainly the best book on the more philosophical elements or spiritual elements (or religious elements if you believe in such things) of transhumanism.
On , the brief description is “This book explores intersections of science and religion, spirituality and technology, engineering and science fiction, mind and matter, and outlines a new cosmic, transhumanist religion. Hacking religion, enlightening science, awakening technology.†is accurate but would do to have a lot more detail I think. I'd like to see an audio version too.
More precisely the book includes topics such as Transhumanism, Hacking Religion, Religions and Transhumanism and related topics, and various other transhumanist philosophical topics. If you were to create a short collection of books on Transhumanism including books like the ‘Transhumanist Reader’ this book (Tales of the Turing Church) should be included and I would encourage you to add this book to your collection.
We had a copy sent to the Transhuman Library at the transhuman house and I expect this to be a key classic in transhumanist thought.
