    • This is a fantastic book filled with information, insights, and strategies to help kids and teens tame their anxiety so they can master their fears. From cognitive behavioral strategies to reducing environmental stressors, from creating a "fear ladder" to stress-busting techniques, to individualized approaches for kids with issues including social anxiety, panic disorder, OCD, phobias, selective mutism, and even less verbal kids with autism, this practical, powerful book is essential reading for anyone who cares about young people with anxiety.
    • Dr. Baker has a wonderful way of motivating kids and teenagers to help us help themselves. He explains all of the major types of anxiety (including social anxiety, generalized anxiety, phobias, OCD, perfectionism, school refusal, selective mutism, and more) and gives us the words and methods to use to show kids and teens that we know how to support them and to guide them in facing their fears. He includes relaxation strategies, exposure therapy, and several components of cognitive behavioral therapies. He packs in a great deal of information about working with those on the autism spectrum as well, from strategies for those who are non-verbal to individuals with high-functioning Asperger's.
    • Extremely useful tool for gaining a better understanding of anxiety-related behaviors and how to use that understanding to apply the practical strategies developed by Dr. Baker. I highly recommend this book for parents and teachers alike as the increasing academic and social expectations of children/teens can impair their ability to appropriately manage stress. • Great help for someone in my family, as as information I can use as a teacher.
    • nice work
    • The author presents what are really very sophisticated and clinically effective cognitive behavioral treatment approaches for helping children, teens I think for adults as well, to learn how to overcome and manage anxiety. I would recommend it for therapists and parents because it is very clear, easy to read apply, and zeroes in on strategies that are effective. While soundly based on research, the reader is able to get to useful clinical information quickly. The first part of the book presents general treatment components that work with verbal clients, but there is also a section to help therapists adapt the strategies for children who may be on the autism spectrum with limited receptive language abilities. Case examples and how the strategies were used are also helpful. As I am incorporating more mindfulness activities to help children learn how to calm themselves and for teachers to use in classrooms, I found the child-friendly progressive muscle relaxation script to be one I will use right away.
    • Dr. Baker's book has been a valuable tool in my work with anxious children and teens. The materials are easy to use and understand. The scientific reasoning approach has worked well with many of my spectrum clients who have natural tendencies for concrete thinking. I found the chapters with case examples very useful in working with clients who present with various forms of anxiety. I will keep it on my desk rather than the book shelf!

    • Many of us work with or know children of all ages and ability levels who suffer from intense and debilitating symptoms of anxiety. We worry about how best to help them. We need not worry any longer. In Overcoming Anxiety, renowned expert, Dr. Jed Baker, provides a comprehensive explanation of anxiety, shows how to implement state-of-the-art interventions, and provides case study examples. And he does this in a slim, highly readable volume that is packed with user-friendly graphics, resources, and apps to download!

Dr. Baker brings tremendous credibility to the discussion because of his decades of hands-on work with children, schools and families. For example, he advocates approaching children with positivity and respect because asking anyone to face their fears is scary. He shows us how to “win over” children to be active participants in their own treatment plan and the importance of listening to children, rewarding their progress and proceeding at their pace. Regardless of the age and ability level of the children, or the scope of their anxiety symptoms, Dr. Baker brings clarity, understanding, and a viable plan to help improve even the most daunting problems.

Any teacher, parent or therapist who reads this book will gain a broad understanding of anxiety and know exactly where to begin to help a child or teen. What an outstanding resource!
